Inlays and Onlays
At our dental office, we are committed to providing our patients with the highest quality care and wide range of restorative solutions to enhance both oral and health aesthetics. One such solution we offer is inlays and onlays. Inlays and onlays are advanced dental restorations designed to repair and strengthen damaged teeth while preserving their natural appearance.
What are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are types of indirect restorations used to repair teeth that have been affected by decay, fractures, or other damage that is too extensive for a regular dental filling but not severe enough to require a dental crown. They are custom-made in a dental laboratory and then bonded onto the damaged tooth surface.
Inlays
An inlay is similar to a dental filling but is created outside of the mouth. It is made of durable materials such as porcelain, composite resin, or gold. The inlay is precisely fitted and bonded to the prepared area of the tooth. Inlays are ideal for restoring the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars and are a conservative alternative to crowns.
Onlays
Onlays, also known as partial crowns, are restorations that cover a larger portion of the tooth compared to inlays. They extend over one or more cusps, providing enhanced structural support to the tooth. Onlays are suitable for teeth with more extensive damage or decay that affects the biting surface and sides of the tooth. Like inlays, onlays are custom-made to match the natural shape and color of your teeth.
How are Inlays and Onlays Placed?
The process of getting an inlay or onlay typically involves two visits to our dental office. During the first appointment, Dr. Anh Nguyen or Dr. Quyen Nguyen will prepare the affected tooth by removing any decayed or damaged portions. An impression of the prepared tooth is taken, which is then sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate the customized inlay or onlay. While your restoration is being created, a temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth.
On your second visit, the temporary filling is removed, and the permanent inlay or onlay is carefully placed and bonded onto your tooth using strong dental adhesives. Dr. Anh Nguyen or Dr. Quyen Nguyen will ensure the restoration fits precisely and comfortably, allowing for proper function and a seamless appearance.
Benefits of Inlays and Onlays
- Aesthetics: Inlays and onlays are designed to match the natural color and shape of your teeth, providing a discreet and seamless restoration that blends in with your smile.
- Durability: With proper care and maintenance, inlays and onlays can offer long-lasting results. They are made from durable materials that are resistant to wear, providing excellent functionality and strength.
- Tooth Preservation: Unlike dental crowns, inlays and onlays require minimal alteration of the tooth structure. They help preserve the healthy tooth structure while effectively restoring damaged areas.
- Enhanced Strength: Inlays and onlays provide added strength and support to weakened teeth, reducing the risk of further damage and fractures.
- Easy Maintenance: Inlays and onlays can be cared for just like your natural teeth, with regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits. They do not stain or discolor over time, ensuring a long-lasting attractive smile.
